Types of Programming

Community Coach Program: 6-12 years

The Community Coach Program provides the tools teachers and coaches need to make volleyball FUN for 6 to 12-year old’s.

Volleyball has traditionally been viewed as a difficult sport to introduce to young children. With the simple modifications that the Community Coach Program offers, teachers and coaches can provide their children with a fun and rewarding volleyball experience.  Best of all you don't need to be a volleyball expert to get started!

The Community Coach Program is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) online course designed for Elementary School Teachers delivering physical education curriculum for grades 1-6 (6 units), as well as being beneficial for leaders in community centres and volleyball clubs. The course is $59. Click here to begin!

The Community Coach Volleyball eLearning module provides teachers and community leaders with:

•    2-3 hours of interactive exercises, video demonstrations, and quizzes to support teachers and coaches on how to deliver unit plans.

•    150-page Leader Guide with sample lesson plans and assessments, downloadable after the purchase of the e-module

•    Lesson plans are divided into 6 units, with material for 6 unique classes/sessions per unit (warm-up, grouping activities, games and cool-down)

•    5 Professional Development (PD) points for NCCP certified coaches

•    Teachers and coaches who complete the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) pathway will achieve the status of: "Trained" Community Coach

Community/Atomic Program: 9-12 years

Volleyball Canada has developed the Community Program (formerly Atomic), an exciting approach to learning and teaching volleyball (after the Elementary Program).

The Community Program is a great tool for teaching children the basics of the sport and getting them ready for the more complex 6 on 6 game when they are older.

·      Is a companion program to Volleyball Canada’s successful Elementary Program, and continues to build on the Elementary concepts.

·      This program focuses on fair play, skill development, teamwork and most of all a rewarding game-play experience. Its larger goal is to develop a passion for the sport in the younger players of the game!

·      Eight-week program where skills can be acquired in a practice setting.

·      During each session, time is spent equally on skill development and game play.

·      Each session plan is easily adapted to the skill level of a group. Whether the players are novices or advanced, the Community Program is adjustable. The program is self-directed so anyone can teach this program: teachers, coaches, sport programmers.

·      The Community Program can be incorporated into any physical education class, volleyball club or community program. It incorporates principles established in the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) athlete development model for Learning to Train Stage athletes.

Smashball: 6-12 years

Smashball provides a modified version of volleyball better suited to children based on their abilities. Modifications are tailored to meet each child’s development age, which optimizes future development and enjoyment playing volleyball. The game also focuses on the sport’s most exciting skill – the spike!

Smashball can be used as a game play format within the Elementary or Community Programs. See this instructional video from the Ontario Volleyball Association.

·      5 unique levels of Smashball progress participants from only using the serve and spike with one contact, up to using a variety of volleyball skills and three contacts.

·      Smashball teaches children the basic motor elements necessary in various physical activities and then applies them to volleyball

·      Smashball allows children to develop a positive attitude toward volleyball through a positive sport experience

·      Smashball has fewer rules, less equipment, making it easier for children to play anywhere, even at home!

·      Smashball uses fewer players on smaller courts, which allows for increased number of ball touches – making a more efficient and fun learning environment.

·      Smashball immerses children in the other side of a team-based sport – life skills development: emphasizing clear communication, being supportive of teammates, and good sportsmanship

·      Smashball is played with lighter, softer volleyballs and lower nets – leading to more success on the court

·      Smashball promotes volleyball as an activity for the physical education curriculum and as an inter-school sport.

·      Smashball can be structured by skill/technique. You can structure games/drills by introducing techniques step by step.
