Atlantic Beach Tour Week 1 Recap

2016-06-23

See what happened on the first stop of this season's Atlantic Beach Tour.

Last weekend, 14 Senior Men’s and 12 Senior Women’s teams gathered at the Beach Park in Dartmouth try their luck at $800 in cash prizes. This division featured teams from Quebec, PEI, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, making it the biggest Senior Event we have ever had. The youth teams were showing their strength as both the Men’s and the Women’s finals had a 19U team vying for the gold. Marc White and Mathieu Losier came out victorious on the men’s side after a tight 3-set win against Kobe Shannon and Harrison Callaghan (18-21, 21-13, 15-10).

We asked Losier his thoughts on the tournament and he replied with “We had a great day, it is awesome to see so many teams here. We just focused on playing a consistent game and Marc a great defensive game, picking up a lot of digs”. Luba Andrushchenko and Sohpie Pitre-Arsenault triumphed on the women’s side with another 3-set win over Victoria Haworth and Micaela Sabean (21-16, 19-21, 15-8). Pitre-Arsenault mentioned that “(I’m) Happy to see a lot of teams, (especially) younger, giving us great competition. It was an awesome tournament and I can’t wait to come back. We had a good transition game and the defense really won it for us today”.

In the youth event on the following day, Chelsea Sponagle and Brittany Plume came out on top against Sophia Oakley and Nikola Doelle in 2 sets, (21-16, 21-12) in the lone 16U division.

The next event in Halifax will be on July 2nd (Senior) and 3rd (Youth). The tour will conclude with the Atlantic Beach Championships, also in Halifax, of which there will be up to $2000 in cash prizes.
